Far back in the memory banks

This is where it all started
March of 2004
Can you believe how skinny my arms are?

If you only knew me through reading my blog, you might make the mistake of assuming that I was born with a bike between my legs. Not so! Although my parents did a great job of helping me enjoy biking throughout my childhood and adolescence, I didn't really get into competitive cycling until I was much older.

I tried my and at one race in my Sophomore year of high school, and we'll just say that it didn't go well. I also did a few mountain bike races here and there when I went to summer camp at Pok-O-MacCready in the Adirondacks, but my first real race was the one pictured above, in March of 2004. I was, at that time, a member of the Skidmore Cycling team, which I had helped to create, and I wore its uniform proudly, as I still do from time to time. I've got a different bike now, and a different helmet shoes and glasses, and lots of different spandex from my new team, but I still call on the same passion that I did in my first race today.

I was thinking about that first race today because BVF is in the midst of an overhaul of sorts. We've secure title sponsorship for next season, and will henceforth be known as BVF/ GQ Racing. That's right, a bunch of dudes who don't seem to own a razor or shaving cream, but who keep their legs smoother than a babies bottom are going to be representing a magazine best known for showing off male fashion. Will the irony ever end? I hope not.

Anyhow, we'll soon have decided on our uniforms for next season, and I'll share those with you when I can, but in the mean time, I wanted to let all of my readers know that while my team affiliation has gotten steadily more serious, my passion for the sport has remained unchanged from the passion I found in that first race in 2004.
